The apple of our eye
The Huon Valley is an incredible location to enjoy the freedom of space, while still being close enough to embrace the busy city life of Hobart.
Ideal for those seeking a location to set up a hobby farm, get closer to the region’s World Heritage Area, or simply just seeking a little more room to breathe, you’ll be surrounded by unbelievable vistas and natural beauty, all while being just 30 minutes from the state’s capital city.
The Huon Valley (the historical region of Tasmania’s apple heritage) has a strong identity as being an epicentre of food and fresh produce, art and culture, accessible rural living, and having a strong sense of community.
As you meander through the valley, you’ll spot roadside stalls bearing fruit and vegetables from nearby producers. Known for its rich history as an apple farming region, the Huon is an often-visited location for its many cideries and wineries, such as Willie Smith’s Apple Shed, Frank’s Cider House and Kate Hill Wines.
Like anywhere in Tasmania, you can experience the full array of seasons in the Huon and we’d argue that there’s no better way to embrace seasonality than with the valley’s full calendar of festivals. The year begins with the Cygnet Folk Festival in January, the Taste of the Huon in March, then wrapping up with the Huon Agricultural Show.
In addition to being a place where you know your neighbours, the natural assets of the Huon provide a wonderful playground for the adventurer – mountain biking, kayaking, bushwalking and hiking await the explorer, as do the beautiful waterways that cast a truly tranquil feel.

Cool and kind
The Huon Valley enjoys warm summers, crisp autumns, frosty winters and gorgeous springs. Top temperatures are usually reached in December and January, with the weather becoming milder in the shoulder seasons (February through to May, and October to November).
Being the last stop before Antarctica, winter in the Huon naturally calls for a warm coat, mittens and mulled wine. Summer on the other hand will have you venturing to the Huon River or Surveyors Bay for a swim.
The Huon’s cooler temperate combined with its rich soils make it ideal for growing a range of cool climate fruit and vegetables in your backyard.
